Opinion of the Federal Council:

1)

The Federal Office of Public Health has been informing the public for years about the best way to reduce exposure to mobile phone waves, with a detailed fact sheet. To prevent unnecessary head exposure, it recommends that users wear headphones and use a hands-free kit equipped with a low-intensity Bluetooth transmitter.

2) and 4)

According to the recommendations of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), the SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) value for mobile phones should not exceed 2 watts per kilogram at the ear. Limit values make it possible to avoid the occurrence of adverse health effects associated with the heating of tissues exposed to high-frequency electromagnetic radiation. They have been defined on the basis of research results on the effects of this radiation and take into account a safety factor of 50 um. The limit values therefore do not cover the as yet little known effects of short and long-term exposure that could occur despite compliance with these values.

De-Kun Li wants to change the conversation on cell phones and cancer. Li, a senior epidemiologist and veteran EMF researcher, believes that brain tumors have been getting too much attention at the expense of other types of cancer, notably colorectal cancer.

Efforts to reduce colon and rectal cancers have been a striking success story for those over 50 years old. Incidence among older Americans declined 32% between 2000 and 2013, due largely to better screening. But the story for young adults is very different. Those born around 1990 now face four times the risk of developing rectal cancer and twice the risk of colon cancer in their 20s, compared to those born around 1950, according to the American Cancer Society. (Rates among young adults are still relatively low; see graphs below.)

According to the National Cancer Institute’s most recent annual report, released last week, colorectal cancer is the most common cancer among men between the age of 20 and 49.

On 30 January, 2019, an Italian Court in the city of Monza, Italy ruled that the Acoustic Neuroma brain tumor of an airport employee was caused by exposure to the radiation from a cell phone he used for over 10 years for his work. The court determined that the tumor has permanently incapacitated him, and ruled it to be an occupational disease. PRESS HERE for the Court’s Decision.

This is the fourth case in which the courts in Italy determined that an Acoustic Neuroma type brain tumor was caused by a cell phone, and the fifth court to make such ruling as in the first case the court decision was appealed and later confirmed by Italy’s Supreme Court. The World Health Organization International Agency for the Research on cancer recommends reducing exposure to radio frequency radiation (RFR) from cell phones. This is stated in the 2011 Press Release. There are also expert advisors of the World Health Organization who are making clear statements that radiofrequency radiation is a carcinogen backed by scientific evidence. On this page we have the documentation of the statements and videos of the World Health organization experts speaking.

It is important to note that the World Health Organization International Agency for the Research on Cancer is a different entity than the World Health Organization EMF Project. The EMF Project was started with industry money and has been criticized for lack of transparency and deep roots to industry. As an example, we are not informed as to who writes the factsheets and content and when asked, there is no response. The one paid staff member on the EMF Project is an engineer who has a history of support by wireless companies.

The collective evidence we can draw from the current scientific status regarding adverse health and biological effects of artificial electromagnetic field exposures, such as from cell phones, antennas/base stations, TV and radio towers, babyalarms, smart meters, powerlines, and WiFi routers, points to that we may be jeopardizing more than our own health and behaviour. Bacteria, plants, birds, frogs, and pollinating insects, may all be targeted, and it is obvious we must proceed with the highest caution before immersing the citizens and our wildlife in more and more artificial electromagnetic fields. We may, as a matter of fact, already be gravely endangering our current as well as coming generations. To not act today, may prove a disaster tomorrow, and such lack of action may again result in the classical “late lessons from early warnings”, or – even worse – “too late lessons from early warnings”.
